Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Meet Your Japan (the “Platform”) respects your personal data. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the rights you can exercise.

We handle personal data in accordance with Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information and other applicable laws. By using our services, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this policy.

1. Scope and definitions

This policy applies to personal data processed through the Platform's website and related services (the “Service”). “Personal data” means information that can identify a specific individual, such as name, date of birth, or contact details, including data that can be used to identify an individual when combined with other information.

2. Information we collect

  • Account data: name, email address, password (stored as an encrypted hash), preferred language and interface settings. If you choose to sign in with a Google account, we receive the basic profile data Google provides, such as your name and email address.
  • Host application and profile data: the name, display name, contact email, service areas, languages, availability windows, requested hourly rate, interest tags, self-introduction, and profile photo you submit for review.
  • Booking and transaction data: the experience booked, dates and times, party size, amounts and fee breakdown, payment status, and transaction identifiers. Card numbers and other payment credentials are handled directly by our payment provider; we do not store full card numbers.
  • Communications: messages you send through in-platform chat, and your correspondence with our support team.
  • Device and usage logs: IP address, browser and device type, access times, pages viewed, and action logs, used for security and service improvement.
  • Cookies and local storage: used to keep you signed in and to remember your language and theme preferences.

3. Purposes of use

We use personal data for the following purposes, within the limits of applicable law:

  • Providing, maintaining, and operating the Service, including account management and matching travelers with hosts and experiences.
  • Processing bookings, sending notifications, handling payments and refunds, and settling with hosts.
  • Responding to inquiries, support requests, complaints, and disputes.
  • Sending service-related notices; you can opt out of marketing messages at any time.
  • Reviewing host eligibility, verifying identity and photos, and conducting safety and anti-fraud checks.
  • Detecting and addressing violations of our Terms of Use.
  • Improving and developing the Service, and creating anonymized statistical data.
  • Processing required by law or by a competent authority.

4. Public information and profiles

Once a host is approved, their profile is publicly displayed: display name, profile photo, service areas, languages, interest tags, self-introduction, hourly rate, and bookable experiences. Please do not include personal data you do not wish to be public in your self-introduction.

A traveler's name is never publicly displayed. When a booking is confirmed, we share the traveler's name with the host and the host's name with the traveler so the two parties can meet and communicate. Please keep communication in the in-platform chat, and avoid sharing unnecessary personal data off-platform.

5. Sharing with third parties and service providers

We do not provide personal data to third parties without consent, except in the following cases:

  • Payment services: payments and refunds are processed by our payment provider (Stripe), to which we provide the information necessary to complete transactions.
  • Cloud and database services: data is stored on infrastructure operated by cloud providers, including the Supabase database service.
  • Email services: service notices and verification emails are sent through our email provider (Google Gmail).
  • Sign-in and translation services: if you sign in with Google, authentication is handled by Google; experience and profile content may be processed by Google's machine translation service to display in multiple languages.
  • Legal requirements: where required by law, a valid request from a court or authority, or where necessary to protect life, body, or property.
  • Platform review: to review host eligibility and handle disputes, our operations staff review application data and communication records to the extent necessary.

6. International transfers

Our service providers may store or process data outside Japan (including the United States and other countries where data centers are located). When transferring data across borders, we take reasonable measures to ensure it receives appropriate protection under applicable law.

7. Cookies and similar technologies

The Service uses cookies and local storage to maintain your session and remember your language and theme preferences. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though some features may stop working as a result.

8. Data retention

We retain personal data for as long as needed to fulfill the purposes of collection, and we keep transaction and tax records for the periods required by law. If you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or anonymize the data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law or necessary for ongoing dispute handling.

9. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal data, including encryption in transit, access controls, and audit logging, and we supervise the personnel and service providers who handle data to prevent loss, destruction, alteration, or leakage.

10. Your rights

Under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information and other applicable laws, you may request disclosure, correction, addition, or deletion of your personal data, or request that we stop collecting, using, or providing it.

Please make requests through the contact details at the end of this policy. We will verify your identity and respond within a reasonable period. If you are dissatisfied with how we handle your data, you may also file a complaint with Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission or your local supervisory authority.

11. Minors

The Service is available only to individuals aged 18 or older. If you are under 18, please do not register or provide personal data; if we discover such an account, we will delete it and its data.

12. Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy in response to legal changes or service updates. We will announce material changes on the website or by email and will show the latest update date on this page. Continuing to use the Service after a revision means you accept the revised policy.
